{{Short description|Instructions for creating and formatting a new Wikifacta article}} {{#seo: |title=Create a new Wikifacta article |title_mode=replace |description=Create a new Wikifacta article and learn how to format wikitext, add references, configure WikiSEO metadata, upload images and complete structured data. |type=website |site_name=Wikifacta |locale=en_NG |author=Wikifacta |robots=index, follow }} __TOC__ <div class="mw-message-box mw-message-box-notice" style="margin:1em 0; padding:1.2em;"> '''Welcome to Wikifacta’s article creation guide.''' Search Wikifacta before creating a duplicate article. </div> </div> === Before creating an article === Wikifacta is an encyclopedia. Articles should provide neutral, verifiable and well-organized information about notable people, organizations, places, events, creative works, products and other subjects. Before creating a page, search for the subject using the Wikifacta search box. Try the full name, common name, former name, abbreviations and alternative spellings. If an article already exists, improve the existing article instead of creating another page about the same subject. Choose a precise article title. For a person, use the name by which the person is most widely and reliably identified. For an organization, use its official or commonly recognized name. Avoid promotional additions such as “official,” “best,” “leading,” “famous,” “number one” or “award-winning” unless the term is genuinely part of the subject’s proper name. The proposed article should be supported by reliable sources. Sources should be independent of the subject whenever possible. An organization’s official website may verify its address, leadership, services or founding information, but independent publications are normally more useful for establishing public significance. Do not create an article containing private personal information, unsupported accusations, copyright violations, fabricated citations, misleading claims or content written primarily as an advertisement. === What happens after you enter a title === When you enter a new title in the creation box, MediaWiki begins its normal page-creation process. The WikifactaStructuredData extension detects that the requested page does not exist and redirects you to Wikifacta’s structured-data form. The process is: # Enter the article title in the creation box. # Complete the Wikifacta structured-data form. # Select the main entity type, such as Person, Organization, Place, Book, Movie, Event or Product. # Enter the required entity information or use the custom JSON-LD tab. # Save the entity record. # Continue to the MediaWiki editing interface. # Write the article in wikitext or VisualEditor. # Preview the article. # Add an edit summary. # Publish the page. Do not remove the structured-data draft token from the editing URL. Wikifacta uses that secure token to connect the entity record to the first saved article revision. === Choosing the main entity type === The main entity is the real-world subject described by the article. Select the most accurate Schema.org type available. Common examples include: {| class="wikitable" ! Article subject ! Recommended main entity type |- | A human being | Person |- | A company, association, agency or institution | Organization |- | A city, country, building or physical location | Place or a more specific place type |- | A book | Book |- | A film | Movie |- | A musical album | MusicAlbum |- | An event | Event |- | A sporting event | SportsEvent |- | A commercial product | Product |- | A brand | Brand |- | A website | WebSite |- | A general subject for which no more specific type is suitable | Thing |} Use the exact type name shown by Schema.org. Type names are case-sensitive in the Wikifacta form. For example, use `Person`, not `person`. When the selected type is exactly `Person` or `Organization`, Wikifacta generates an additional, separate Person or Organization schema alongside the protected Article schema. The Article schema retains its stable `@id` values. The additional standalone Person or Organization schema is generated without `@id` properties. === Completing the structured-data form === The structured-data form has two input methods: * '''Build with fields''' provides guided fields and server-side validation. * '''Paste custom JSON-LD''' allows an experienced editor to import a complete entity object. Most editors should use the guided fields. The form may request the following information: {| class="wikitable" ! Field ! Purpose |- | Main entity type | Identifies the Schema.org class of the article subject. |- | Name | Provides the primary human-readable name of the subject. |- | Primary URL | Provides the canonical Wikifacta article URL or another authoritative primary URL. |- | Main entity image URL | Provides a representative HTTPS image URL for the subject. |- | Description | Gives a concise and neutral identification of the subject. |- | Additional names | Records alternative names, former names, initials, abbreviations or recognized aliases. |- | Entity sameAs | Connects the subject to authoritative pages representing the same entity. |- | Subject of | Lists reliable publications, profiles, reports or creative works substantially about the subject. |- | Has part | Identifies relevant components, divisions or constituent entities. |- | Additional properties | Allows advanced Schema.org properties to be supplied as a JSON object. |- | Nested entities | Allows other referenced entities to be described in a structured JSON array. |} Use HTTPS URLs. Enter one URL per line in multiline URL fields. The structured-data form is not a substitute for the visible article. Important facts contained in the schema should also be supported by the readable article and its references. Search engines may disregard structured data that does not match visible page content. === Using custom JSON-LD === Experienced editors may select the custom JSON-LD tab. The form accepts: * A direct entity object * An Article object containing `mainEntity` * An `@graph` * A top-level JSON array * A complete `<script type="application/ld+json">` block Wikifacta extracts the appropriate entity and inserts it into the protected Article schema. A simplified Person entity may look like this: <syntaxhighlight lang="json"> { "@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "Person", "name": "Example Person", "url": "https://wikifacta.org/wiki/Example_Person", "description": "A concise, neutral description of Example Person.", "additionalName": [ "Recognized alternative name" ], "image": { "@type": "ImageObject", "url": "https://example.org/example-person.jpg", "contentUrl": "https://example.org/example-person.jpg", "caption": "Example Person" }, "sameAs": [ "https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q123456", "https://example.org/verified-profile" ], "subjectOf": [ { "@type": "CreativeWork", "url": "https://example.org/reliable-publication" } ], "hasPart": [ { "url": "https://example.org/appropriate-related-entity" } ] } </syntaxhighlight> The custom JSON-LD must be valid JSON. Property names and text values require quotation marks. Do not use trailing commas after the final property or array item. Do not paste an unrelated entity merely to make a structured-data testing tool report more items. Every property must accurately describe the subject of the article. === Starting the article with a short description === Place a short description near the top of the article: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> {{Short description|Nigerian entrepreneur and web developer}} </syntaxhighlight> A short description should: * Identify the subject concisely. * Distinguish the subject from people or organizations with similar names. * Use sentence case. * Avoid ending with a full stop. * Avoid promotional language. * Usually remain shorter than a complete meta description. * Match the visible article. Examples: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> {{Short description|Nigerian entrepreneur and web developer}} </syntaxhighlight> <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> {{Short description|Nigerian technology and digital marketing company}} </syntaxhighlight> <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> {{Short description|Novel by an English author}} </syntaxhighlight> Avoid descriptions such as: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> {{Short description|The best and most influential entrepreneur in Africa}} </syntaxhighlight> That wording is promotional and makes an unsupported comparative claim. === Adding WikiSEO metadata === Wikifacta uses WikiSEO for HTML titles, meta descriptions, Open Graph metadata and social-media cards. WikiSEO should not be used to generate a competing Article schema because WikifactaStructuredData already produces the authoritative Article JSON-LD. Add a WikiSEO parser function near the beginning of an important article: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> {{#seo: |title=Example Person |title_mode=replace |description=Example Person is a Nigerian entrepreneur and web developer associated with Example Company. |type=article |image=Example Person.jpg |image_alt=Portrait of Example Person |site_name=Wikifacta |locale=en_NG |author=Wikifacta |section=Biography |robots=index, follow }} </syntaxhighlight> The value of `image` should normally be the filename of an image uploaded to Wikifacta. Do not include the `File:` prefix in the WikiSEO image field. Correct: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> |image=Example Person.jpg </syntaxhighlight> Avoid: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> |image=File:Example Person.jpg </syntaxhighlight> For an organization: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> {{#seo: |title=Example Organization |title_mode=replace |description=Example Organization is a Nigerian company operating in technology, publishing and digital services. |type=article |image=Example Organization headquarters.jpg |image_alt=Headquarters of Example Organization |site_name=Wikifacta |locale=en_NG |author=Wikifacta |section=Organizations |robots=index, follow }} </syntaxhighlight> The SEO title and description must match the article. Do not fill the title with repeated keywords. Do not claim that a person or company is the “best,” “largest,” “most trusted” or “leading” unless the visible article attributes the claim to a reliable source. A good meta description is a concise sentence that identifies the subject and its primary significance. Search engines may rewrite the description depending on the search query. The `keywords` parameter is optional and normally unnecessary. Avoid long keyword lists. Wikifacta’s global configuration supplies canonical URLs. Do not add a custom canonical URL unless a page genuinely needs to consolidate with another preferred URL. === Recommended order at the top of an article === A normal article may begin in this order: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> {{Short description|Concise identification of the subject}} {{#seo: |title=Article title |title_mode=replace |description=A concise and factual description of the article subject. |type=article |image=Representative image.jpg |image_alt=Accurate description of the representative image |site_name=Wikifacta |locale=en_NG |author=Wikifacta |section=Appropriate section |robots=index, follow }} {{Infobox person | name = Example Person | image = Example Person.jpg | alt = Portrait of Example Person | caption = Example Person in 2026 | birth_date = {{Birth date and age|1990|1|1}} | birth_place = Example City, Example Country | occupation = Entrepreneur }} '''Example Person''' is a Nigerian entrepreneur and web developer known for... <ref name="example-source">{{cite web |title=Reliable source title |url=https://example.org/reliable-source |website=Example Publication |date=1 January 2026 |access-date={{CURRENTDAY}} {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTYEAR}} }}</ref> </syntaxhighlight> The exact infobox depends on the article subject and the templates installed on Wikifacta. === Writing the lead section === The lead is the opening section before the first heading. It should summarize the article so that a reader can understand the subject without immediately reading the remaining sections. The first sentence should usually: * State the full name of the subject. * Identify the subject’s nationality, location or jurisdiction where relevant. * State the subject’s principal occupation, classification or significance. * Avoid promotional wording. * Include citations for claims that are not obvious or universally established. Example: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> '''Example Person''' is a Nigerian entrepreneur and software developer known for founding Example Company.<ref name="source-one">{{cite web |title=Profile of Example Person |url=https://example.org/profile |website=Example Publication |date=10 January 2026 |access-date=1 October 2026 }}</ref> </syntaxhighlight> Do not begin with marketing slogans, mission statements, lists of awards or unsupported superlatives. Poor: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> '''Example Person''' is the world’s most innovative and highly respected business leader. </syntaxhighlight> Better: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> '''Example Person''' is a Nigerian entrepreneur and software developer who founded Example Company in 2022. </syntaxhighlight> === Creating sections === Use headings to organize substantial topics. Example: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> === Early life and education === Write the section here. === Career === Write the section here. === Business activities === Write the section here. === Publications === Write the section here. === Awards and recognition === Write the section here. === Personal life === Include only well-sourced, appropriate and non-intrusive information. === References === {{Reflist}} === External links === * {{Official website|https://example.org/}} </syntaxhighlight> Do not create an excessive number of short sections containing only one sentence. Combine closely related information into coherent sections. === Paragraph formatting === Separate paragraphs with a blank line. Correct: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> This is the first paragraph. It contains related information about one part of the subject. This is the second paragraph. It introduces another part of the subject. </syntaxhighlight> Do not insert `<br>` tags between ordinary paragraphs. Avoid manually indenting paragraphs with spaces. A leading space tells MediaWiki to display the line as preformatted text. === Adding emphasis === Use two apostrophes for italics: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> ''Book title'' </syntaxhighlight> Use three apostrophes for bold text: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> '''Article subject''' </syntaxhighlight> The article subject is normally bolded only in the opening sentence and when identifying a significant alternative name. Avoid excessive bold text. === Adding internal links === Link to another Wikifacta article with double square brackets: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> [[Nigeria]] </syntaxhighlight> Use a piped link when the displayed words should differ from the destination title: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> [[Digital marketing|digital marketing professional]] </syntaxhighlight> Link the first relevant occurrence of an important term. Do not link every repetition. A red link indicates that the target article does not yet exist. Red links may be appropriate for notable subjects that should eventually have articles, but avoid creating large numbers of speculative red links. === Adding external links === External links use single square brackets: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> [https://example.org/ Official website] </syntaxhighlight> External links should usually appear in citations or the External links section. Avoid placing promotional links throughout the article body. Do not use bare URLs when a descriptive label is possible. Avoid: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> https://example.org/ </syntaxhighlight> Prefer: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> [https://example.org/ Official website] </syntaxhighlight> === Adding references === Place a citation immediately after the statement it supports: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> Example Organization was founded in 2022.<ref>{{cite web |title=Example Organization launches |url=https://example.org/reliable-report |website=Example Publication |date=15 March 2022 |access-date=1 October 2026 }}</ref> </syntaxhighlight> Add the references section near the end: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> === References === {{Reflist}} </syntaxhighlight> If the citation templates have not been installed, basic references can still be written: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> Example Organization was founded in 2022.<ref>[https://example.org/reliable-report “Example Organization launches”], ''Example Publication'', 15 March 2022. Retrieved 1 October 2026.</ref> </syntaxhighlight> Reuse a source with a named reference: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> The company was founded in 2022.<ref name="example-report">{{cite web |title=Example report |url=https://example.org/report |website=Example Publication |date=15 March 2022 |access-date=1 October 2026 }}</ref> The founder announced a new service later that year.<ref name="example-report" /> </syntaxhighlight> Every citation should support the nearby claim. Do not cite a source that merely mentions the subject but does not verify the statement. === Adding images === Upload eligible images through: <syntaxhighlight lang="text"> Special:Upload </syntaxhighlight> Confirm that the image is freely licensed, in the public domain or otherwise legally permitted on Wikifacta. Do not upload an image merely because it appears in a search engine. Insert an image with: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> [[File:Example Person.jpg|thumb|alt=Portrait of Example Person|Example Person in 2026]] </syntaxhighlight> The `alt` text should describe the image for readers who cannot see it. The caption should provide useful context without repeating the entire surrounding paragraph. A lead or infobox image may also become the PageImages representative image. WikifactaStructuredData can use that image for both `Article.image` and `mainEntity.image`. Use a clear, high-quality image. Avoid tiny images, stretched images, screenshots containing excessive interface elements and images that do not depict the article subject. === Adding an infobox === An infobox summarizes key facts. The available template depends on the subject. Person example: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> {{Infobox person | name = Example Person | image = Example Person.jpg | alt = Portrait of Example Person | caption = Example Person in 2026 | birth_date = {{Birth date and age|1990|1|1}} | birth_place = Example City, Example Country | nationality = Nigerian | occupation = Entrepreneur | years_active = 2015–present | known_for = Founding Example Company | website = {{URL|https://example.org/}} }} </syntaxhighlight> Organization example: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> {{Infobox company | name = Example Organization | logo = Example Organization logo.png | logo_alt = Logo of Example Organization | type = Private | industry = Technology | founded = 2022 | founder = Example Person | headquarters = Example City, Nigeria | area_served = Worldwide | key_people = Example Person | products = Example Product | website = {{URL|https://example.org/}} }} </syntaxhighlight> Do not place unsupported claims in an infobox. Infobox facts remain part of the article and should be supported by sources. === Adding lists === Use an asterisk for an unordered list: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> * First item * Second item * Third item </syntaxhighlight> Use a number sign for an ordered list: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> # First step # Second step # Third step </syntaxhighlight> Avoid converting the entire article into lists. Most encyclopedic content should be written as connected prose. === Adding tables === Use tables for genuinely tabular information. Example: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> {| class="wikitable" ! Year ! Work ! Role |- | 2023 | ''Example Work'' | Writer |- | 2025 | ''Another Work'' | Producer |} </syntaxhighlight> Always close a table with: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> |} </syntaxhighlight> If text, references or categories appear inside a table unexpectedly, check for a missing closing `|}`. === Adding categories === Place categories at the bottom of the article: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> [[Category:Nigerian entrepreneurs]] [[Category:Nigerian web developers]] [[Category:Living people]] [[Category:1995 births]] </syntaxhighlight> Use only relevant categories that exist or are intentionally being created. Do not place categories inside: * An unclosed table * `<nowiki>` tags * `<syntaxhighlight>` tags * A template parameter * An HTML comment If a category displays as ordinary text, inspect the surrounding wikitext for an unclosed template, table or formatting tag. === Creating a redirect === If the subject has a recognized alternative name, create a redirect page containing: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> #REDIRECT [[Preferred article title]] </syntaxhighlight> A redirect should point to the canonical article title. Example: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> #REDIRECT [[Example Person]] </syntaxhighlight> Do not create separate duplicate articles for minor spelling variations. === Creating a disambiguation page === A disambiguation page distinguishes subjects with the same or similar names. Example: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> '''Example''' may refer to: * [[Example Person]], a Nigerian entrepreneur * [[Example Organization]], a technology company * [[Example (book)]], a 2025 novel {{Disambiguation}} </syntaxhighlight> Use concise descriptions that help readers select the intended article. === Avoiding conflicts between WikiSEO and structured data === WikiSEO and WikifactaStructuredData have different responsibilities. WikiSEO should handle: * HTML titles * Meta descriptions * Open Graph metadata * Social-media images * X/Twitter cards * Page-level robots directives WikifactaStructuredData should handle: * The protected Article JSON-LD * Article dates * Article author and publisher * Article image * Main entity * Entity image * Entity relationships * The separate Person or Organization schema Do not paste another complete Article JSON-LD script directly into the article wikitext. Doing so may produce duplicate Article items. Wikifacta’s configuration should keep WikiSEO’s SchemaOrg generator disabled: <syntaxhighlight lang="php"> $wgMetadataGenerators = [ 'OpenGraph', 'Twitter', ]; </syntaxhighlight> Editors do not need to add that PHP setting to individual articles. It belongs in `LocalSettings.php`. === Article quality checklist === Before publishing, confirm that: * The title accurately identifies the subject. * No duplicate article already exists. * The short description is concise and neutral. * The WikiSEO description matches the visible article. * The lead identifies the subject clearly. * Promotional wording has been removed. * Important claims have reliable citations. * Dates, names and locations have been checked. * The infobox agrees with the article body. * The representative image depicts the correct subject. * Image licensing is appropriate. * Internal links point to relevant pages. * External links are limited and useful. * References are properly closed. * Tables end with `|}`. * Templates end with `}}`. * Categories appear at the bottom. * The structured-data entity type is accurate. * The structured-data URLs use HTTPS. * `sameAs` URLs represent the same entity. * `subjectOf` URLs point to works substantially about the entity. * The schema does not make claims absent from the article. * The preview contains no obvious formatting errors. * A meaningful edit summary has been entered. === Complete starter template for a person === Copy and customize this skeleton after completing the structured-data form: <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> {{Short description|Nationality and principal occupation}} {{#seo: |title=Full name |title_mode=replace |description=Full name is a nationality occupation known for a concise, factual description of the subject’s significance. |type=article |image=Representative image.jpg |image_alt=Portrait of Full name |site_name=Wikifacta |locale=en_NG |author=Wikifacta |section=Biography |robots=index, follow }} {{Infobox person | name = Full name | image = Representative image.jpg | alt = Portrait of Full name | caption = Full name in YEAR | birth_date = | birth_place = | nationality = | occupation = | years_active = | known_for = | website = }} '''Full name''' is a nationality occupation known for... <ref name="source-one">{{cite web |title=Title of reliable source |url=https://example.org/reliable-source |website=Name of publication |date=1 January 2026 |access-date=1 October 2026 }}</ref> === Early life and education === Write a neutral, sourced account of the subject’s early life and education. Do not include private or unverifiable details. === Career === Describe the subject’s career chronologically. Cite reliable sources for positions, organizations, projects and significant achievements. === Other activities === Describe other relevant and reliably sourced activities. === Personal life === Include only appropriate information already published by reliable sources. Respect privacy, especially for living people. === References === {{Reflist}} === External links === * [https://example.org/ Official website] [[Category:Appropriate category]] [[Category:Living people]] </syntaxhighlight> === Complete starter template for an organization === <syntaxhighlight lang="wikitext"> {{Short description|Nationality or location and type of organization}} {{#seo: |title=Organization name |title_mode=replace |description=Organization name is a location-based organization operating in its principal industry or field. |type=article |image=Organization headquarters.jpg |image_alt=Headquarters of Organization name |site_name=Wikifacta |locale=en_NG |author=Wikifacta |section=Organizations |robots=index, follow }} {{Infobox company | name = Organization name | logo = Organization logo.png | logo_alt = Logo of Organization name | type = | industry = | founded = | founder = | headquarters = | area_served = | key_people = | products = | services = | website = }} '''Organization name''' is a type of organization headquartered in location. It was founded in year by founder and operates in industry or field.<ref name="source-one">{{cite web |title=Title of reliable source |url=https://example.org/reliable-source |website=Name of publication |date=1 January 2026 |access-date=1 October 2026 }}</ref> === History === Describe the organization’s development chronologically. === Operations === Describe its principal activities, services, products, geographic coverage or organizational structure. === Leadership === Include notable leadership information supported by reliable sources. === Reception === Summarize significant independent coverage, criticism, recognition or public response neutrally. === References === {{Reflist}} === External links === * [https://example.org/ Official website] [[Category:Organizations established in YEAR]] [[Category:Appropriate industry category]] </syntaxhighlight> === Previewing and publishing === Use the preview function before publishing. Previewing helps identify: * Broken templates * Unclosed references * Incorrect tables * Missing images * Category problems * Heading problems * Unexpected raw code * Typographical errors Enter a concise edit summary, such as: <syntaxhighlight lang="text"> Created article with infobox, references, SEO metadata and categories </syntaxhighlight> Select the appropriate editing options and publish the page. After publication, check: * The article’s visible formatting * The short description * The HTML title * The meta description * The social-sharing image * The references * The categories * The Article structured data * The separate Person or Organization structured data, where applicable If a recently published change is not visible, purge the page by adding: <syntaxhighlight lang="text"> ?action=purge </syntaxhighlight> to the article URL. Example: <syntaxhighlight lang="text"> https://wikifacta.org/wiki/Example_Person?action=purge </syntaxhighlight> <div class="mw-message-box mw-message-box-success" style="margin:2em 0; padding:1.2em;"> '''Ready to begin?''' Return to the creation box at the top of this page, enter the exact proposed article title and select “Start article and structured data.” </div>
