Wikifacta:Privacy policy
Introduction
[edit source]Wikifacta is an online encyclopedia of facts written in simple English and maintained by verified editors. The website is operated by Wikifacta Technologies Ltd, referred to in this Privacy Policy as “Wikifacta,” “we,” “us,” or “our.”
We respect the privacy of our readers, registered users, article subjects, contributors, correspondents, and other visitors. This Privacy Policy describes the types of information that may be processed through Wikifacta, why the information is processed, how it may be used or disclosed, and the choices and rights available to individuals.
This Privacy Policy applies to the Wikifacta website at wikifacta.org, including its encyclopedia pages, account features, forms, special pages, editorial communication channels, and other services that link to this policy.
This policy does not automatically apply to independent third-party websites merely because Wikifacta links to them. Third-party websites have their own privacy policies and practices.
By using Wikifacta, you acknowledge that you have read this Privacy Policy. Where consent is the appropriate legal basis for a specific type of processing, Wikifacta may request consent separately.

Questions about this Privacy Policy or requests concerning personal information may be sent to info@wikifacta.org.
Information we may collect
[edit source]The information Wikifacta collects depends on how a person interacts with the website. Some information may be provided directly by the user, while other information may be generated automatically by the website, server, browser, security systems, or related technologies.
Information you provide directly
[edit source]Wikifacta may collect information that you voluntarily provide when you:
- create or maintain a user account;
- contact Wikifacta by email;
- submit an article request;
- suggest a correction or update;
- provide a source or reference;
- report copyright infringement;
- make a privacy request;
- report abuse, vandalism, impersonation, or another concern;
- participate in an editorial process;
- submit a technical support request; or
- otherwise communicate with Wikifacta.
Depending on the interaction, this information may include:
- your name;
- username;
- email address;
- telephone number;
- mailing address;
- account preferences;
- professional or organizational affiliation;
- the subject of your request;
- the contents of your message;
- sources, documents, links, or attachments you provide;
- information about your relationship to an article subject;
- records needed to verify your identity or authority;
- technical details you provide while reporting an error; and
- any other information you choose to include in your communication.
Please do not send highly sensitive information unless it is necessary for a specific, legitimate request and Wikifacta has asked you to provide it through an appropriate channel.
Account information
[edit source]If Wikifacta permits account registration, the website may collect an account name, password-related authentication data, email address, account preferences, registration date, login history, user rights, and records of account activity.
Passwords should be stored using one-way cryptographic hashing rather than as readable text. Wikifacta personnel should not be able to retrieve a user’s original password. Users are responsible for protecting their login information and should not reuse a password that they use on another website.
A username may become publicly associated with edits, discussions, uploads, logs, or other public actions performed through the account.
Public contributions and activity
[edit source]MediaWiki is designed to preserve page histories and public records of many editing actions. If a person edits a page, uploads a file, participates on a discussion page, creates an account, or performs another recorded action, information associated with that activity may appear publicly.
Public information may include:
- the username associated with an edit;
- the date and time of an edit;
- an edit summary;
- the content added or removed;
- uploaded files and descriptions;
- public discussion-page comments;
- user-page content;
- publicly recorded administrative actions; and
- other information intentionally submitted to a public part of the website.
If editing without an account is enabled, an editor’s Internet Protocol address may be recorded and could be displayed in page history, recent changes, abuse logs, or related interfaces, depending on the version and configuration of MediaWiki.
Users should not place private information on public pages. Public contributions may be copied, quoted, indexed, archived, redistributed, or preserved by third parties outside Wikifacta’s control.
Information collected automatically
[edit source]When a person visits Wikifacta, the website and its infrastructure may automatically receive technical information such as:
- Internet Protocol address;
- browser type and version;
- operating system;
- device type;
- referring webpage;
- pages requested;
- date and time of access;
- language settings;
- general geographic region inferred from an Internet Protocol address;
- response status;
- file size transferred;
- session identifiers;
- cookie identifiers;
- security-event information;
- request headers; and
- diagnostic information concerning website errors or performance.
This information may appear in web-server logs, application logs, firewall logs, content-delivery-network records, security systems, database logs, and analytics systems.
Wikifacta may use this information to operate the website, deliver requested pages, maintain security, prevent abuse, investigate technical problems, understand aggregate usage patterns, and improve performance.
Information about article subjects
[edit source]Because Wikifacta is an encyclopedia, its articles may contain information about identifiable people. Biographical information may include names, occupations, educational history, professional affiliations, notable works, awards, public positions, published statements, images, and other information relevant to an encyclopedic article.
Wikifacta aims to obtain this information from lawful and reasonably reliable sources. The publication of biographical information is distinct from information collected directly from a website visitor.
Wikifacta should consider accuracy, relevance, source quality, public interest, freedom of expression, privacy, fairness, and applicable law when publishing information about an identifiable person.
Being mentioned in a Wikifacta article does not necessarily mean that the individual created an account, contacted Wikifacta, approved the article, or provided the information directly.
How we use information
[edit source]Wikifacta may use personal information for the following purposes:
- to deliver requested webpages and website functions;
- to create, authenticate, maintain, and protect user accounts;
- to respond to messages and support requests;
- to evaluate article requests and proposed corrections;
- to verify the authenticity or relevance of submitted information;
- to communicate with users, article subjects, representatives, or contributors;
- to maintain page histories and editorial accountability;
- to detect spam, vandalism, impersonation, fraud, abuse, and security threats;
- to enforce website rules and terms;
- to investigate technical problems;
- to maintain backups and restore website operations;
- to comply with applicable law, legal process, or regulatory obligations;
- to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims;
- to protect the rights, safety, and property of Wikifacta, its users, and others;
- to measure and improve website performance;
- to understand general and aggregate usage patterns;
- to preserve the integrity of published encyclopedia content;
- to process copyright, privacy, and factual-correction requests; and
- to carry out other purposes disclosed when the information is collected.
Wikifacta should not use personal information in a way that is materially incompatible with the purpose for which it was collected without providing an appropriate notice or obtaining consent where required.
Legal bases for processing
[edit source]Depending on the person’s location and the circumstances, Wikifacta may process personal information on one or more of the following legal bases:
- Consent: the individual has agreed to a specific use of personal information.
- Contractual necessity: processing is required to provide a service or perform an agreement requested by the individual.
- Legal obligation: processing is required to comply with applicable law, a court order, or another binding legal requirement.
- Legitimate interests: processing is reasonably necessary for operating, securing, improving, and administering Wikifacta, provided those interests are not overridden by the individual’s rights and interests.
- Public interest: processing is necessary for an appropriate task carried out in the public interest where recognized by applicable law.
- Protection of vital interests: processing is necessary to protect a person’s life or physical safety.
- Freedom of expression and information: certain publication and archival activities may be undertaken to support lawful encyclopedic, journalistic, academic, literary, or informational purposes.
The applicable legal basis may differ according to the information, purpose, jurisdiction, and relationship between the individual and Wikifacta.
Cookies and similar technologies
[edit source]Wikifacta may use cookies, local storage, session storage, tokens, or similar technologies to operate the website.
A cookie is a small piece of data stored by a browser. Cookies may be used for purposes such as:
- maintaining a logged-in session;
- remembering account or display preferences;
- protecting forms against unauthorized requests;
- supporting security and abuse prevention;
- remembering a user’s language or interface settings;
- balancing server traffic;
- determining whether a notice has been displayed;
- diagnosing errors; and
- measuring website performance or aggregate usage.
Some cookies may be strictly necessary for the website to function. Other cookies, such as analytics, personalization, or advertising cookies, may require notice or consent in certain jurisdictions.
Users can usually control cookies through their browser settings. Blocking all cookies may prevent login, preference storage, or other website features from working correctly.
If Wikifacta introduces non-essential analytics, advertising, or tracking technologies, it should provide any notices, consent controls, or opt-out mechanisms required by applicable law.
Analytics
[edit source]Wikifacta may use privacy-conscious analytics or aggregate server statistics to understand how the website is used. Analytics information may include page views, approximate location, device category, browser type, referral source, visit duration, and interactions with website features.
Where possible, Wikifacta should minimize analytics data, limit retention, restrict access, and avoid using analytics information to identify an individual unnecessarily.
If a third-party analytics provider is used, that provider may receive technical information according to its own agreement with Wikifacta and its applicable privacy terms.
Wikifacta should not represent that it uses no analytics unless all analytics scripts, server-level analytics, content-delivery-network analytics, and similar measurement services have been disabled.
Advertising and sale or sharing of personal information
[edit source]As of the effective date of this policy, Wikifacta does not sell personal information for money and does not intentionally share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising.
Wikifacta may disclose limited information to service providers that process information on its behalf for hosting, security, content delivery, email, technical support, analytics, backup, or other operational purposes. Such service-provider disclosures are not intended to constitute a sale of personal information.
If Wikifacta materially changes its practices by introducing personalised advertising, selling personal information, or sharing personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising, this Privacy Policy should be updated and any legally required opt-out mechanism should be provided.
Where applicable, Wikifacta will seek to recognize legally valid browser-based opt-out preference signals, including Global Privacy Control.
How information may be disclosed
[edit source]Wikifacta may disclose information in the following circumstances:
Service providers
[edit source]Information may be disclosed to vendors that perform services on Wikifacta’s behalf, such as:
- web hosting;
- domain-name services;
- content delivery;
- security monitoring;
- email delivery;
- database administration;
- data backup;
- error monitoring;
- analytics;
- technical support;
- file storage; and
- professional advisory services.
Service providers should receive only the information reasonably necessary to perform their assigned functions and should be subject to appropriate contractual or legal obligations.
Legal and regulatory requirements
[edit source]Wikifacta may preserve or disclose information when reasonably necessary to:
- comply with applicable law;
- respond to a lawful court order, subpoena, warrant, or regulatory request;
- cooperate with a legally authorized investigation;
- establish, exercise, or defend a legal claim;
- protect the rights or safety of Wikifacta, its users, or another person;
- investigate fraud, abuse, or security incidents; or
- enforce applicable website rules or agreements.
Wikifacta may challenge, narrow, or reject a request when it is invalid, excessively broad, or not legally binding.
Organizational transactions
[edit source]If Wikifacta or Wikifacta Technologies Ltd is involved in a merger, acquisition, restructuring, financing, transfer of assets, insolvency process, or similar transaction, relevant information may be disclosed to advisers and transaction participants subject to appropriate confidentiality protections.
If responsibility for personal information is transferred to another entity, users should be notified where required by law.
With consent or at the user’s direction
[edit source]Wikifacta may disclose information when an individual has provided valid consent or specifically requested the disclosure.
Publicly submitted information
[edit source]Information intentionally posted to public areas of Wikifacta may be visible to anyone. Publicly accessible content may be indexed by search engines, archived, copied, quoted, or redistributed by third parties.
Wikifacta cannot guarantee that publicly disclosed information can be completely removed from every external copy or archive.
Data retention
[edit source]Wikifacta retains personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, subject to operational, editorial, security, archival, contractual, and legal requirements.
Retention periods may vary according to the type of information:
- Account information may be retained while an account remains active and for a reasonable period afterward.
- Public contributions and page histories may be retained indefinitely as part of the encyclopedia’s editorial and historical record.
- Server and security logs may be retained for a limited period appropriate to security, troubleshooting, and abuse prevention.
- Correspondence may be retained while a request is being handled and afterward where necessary for documentation, dispute resolution, or legal compliance.
- Privacy-request records may be retained to demonstrate compliance and prevent fraudulent requests.
- Backups may temporarily preserve information after it has been removed from active systems.
- Legal records may be retained for the period required by applicable law or necessary to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.
When information is no longer reasonably needed, Wikifacta may delete, anonymize, aggregate, or securely archive it, depending on the circumstances.
Security
[edit source]Wikifacta uses reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures intended to protect personal information from unauthorized access, accidental loss, alteration, disclosure, destruction, and misuse.
Security measures may include:
- access controls;
- password hashing;
- encrypted network connections;
- software updates;
- firewall and abuse-prevention systems;
- backup procedures;
- account permissions;
- security logging;
- malware monitoring;
- restricted administrative access; and
- incident investigation procedures.
No internet transmission, website, database, or storage system can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Users should choose strong passwords, protect their devices, avoid sharing login credentials, and notify Wikifacta if they suspect unauthorized access.
Security concerns may be reported to info@wikifacta.org.
International data transfers
[edit source]Wikifacta is accessible internationally. Its operators, hosting providers, content-delivery networks, email providers, security services, or other service providers may process information in countries other than the country where the user is located.
Privacy laws and government-access rules may differ between jurisdictions. Where required, Wikifacta should use appropriate safeguards for international transfers, which may include contractual protections, adequacy mechanisms, consent, or another lawful transfer basis.
By using an international website, users understand that technical information may be processed in locations where Wikifacta or its service providers operate.
Children’s privacy
[edit source]Wikifacta is a general-audience encyclopedia and is not intentionally directed at children under 13 years of age.
Wikifacta does not knowingly collect personal information directly from a child under 13 without authorization where parental consent is legally required. If Wikifacta learns that such information was collected contrary to applicable law, it may remove the information or take other appropriate action.
Parents or guardians who believe that a child has submitted personal information improperly should contact info@wikifacta.org.
Older minors should avoid publishing their full address, private telephone number, school schedule, identity documents, financial information, or other sensitive information on public pages.
Your privacy rights
[edit source]Depending on the individual’s location and the applicable law, a person may have rights concerning personal information, including the right to:
- request confirmation of whether Wikifacta processes personal information about them;
- request access to personal information;
- request correction of inaccurate or incomplete information;
- request deletion or erasure of personal information;
- request restriction of processing;
- object to certain processing;
- withdraw consent where processing depends on consent;
- request data portability where applicable;
- opt out of the sale or legally defined sharing of personal information;
- limit certain uses or disclosures of sensitive personal information;
- object to certain automated decision-making;
- complain to an appropriate data-protection authority; and
- receive equal service without unlawful discrimination for exercising a privacy right.
These rights are not absolute. A request may be limited or denied where an exception applies, including circumstances involving freedom of expression, public-interest information, legal obligations, security, fraud prevention, record preservation, public contributions, legal claims, or the rights of other people.
Deleting a user account does not necessarily require deletion of public contributions or page histories. MediaWiki relies on historical records to preserve attribution, licensing, editorial accountability, and the integrity of article revisions.
California privacy rights
[edit source]Where the California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, applies to Wikifacta’s processing, eligible California residents may have the right to:
- know the categories and specific pieces of personal information collected;
- know the categories of sources from which information was collected;
- know the purposes for which information is used;
- know the categories of third parties to which information is disclosed;
- request deletion, subject to legal exceptions;
- request correction of inaccurate personal information;
- opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information;
- limit certain uses and disclosures of sensitive personal information; and
- receive non-discriminatory treatment for exercising applicable rights.
Wikifacta does not sell personal information for money as of the effective date of this policy. Wikifacta also does not intentionally share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising.
A California resident may submit a request by emailing info@wikifacta.org with the subject line “California Privacy Request.”
The request should explain the right the individual wishes to exercise and provide enough information for Wikifacta to locate relevant records. Wikifacta may request reasonable identity verification before disclosing, correcting, or deleting information.
An authorized agent may make a request where permitted by law. Wikifacta may require evidence of the agent’s authority and may verify the request directly with the consumer.
Information about California privacy rights is available from the California Attorney General.
Nigerian data-protection rights
[edit source]Where the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 applies, an eligible data subject may have rights concerning access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection, consent withdrawal, data portability, and certain automated decision-making.
A Nigerian data subject may submit a request by emailing info@wikifacta.org with the subject line “Nigeria Data Protection Request.”
Wikifacta may request information necessary to verify the requester’s identity and protect personal information from unauthorized disclosure.
An individual who is dissatisfied with the handling of personal information may have the right to submit a complaint to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
European and United Kingdom privacy rights
[edit source]Where the European Union General Data Protection Regulation, the United Kingdom General Data Protection Regulation, or related legislation applies, eligible individuals may have rights to access, rectify, erase, restrict, object, withdraw consent, receive portable data, and complain to a competent supervisory authority.
Wikifacta may continue processing information where an applicable exception or overriding lawful basis exists. For example, deletion rights may be limited where information is necessary for freedom of expression, compliance with a legal obligation, archival purposes, public-interest purposes, or legal claims.
Exercising a privacy right
[edit source]To submit a privacy request, email:
Use the subject line:
Privacy Request
The message should include:
- your name;
- your country or state of residence;
- the specific privacy right you wish to exercise;
- the relevant account name or email address;
- the page or service associated with the request;
- a clear description of the information involved; and
- any information reasonably necessary to locate the relevant record.
Do not send an unredacted passport, national identity number, payment card, or other highly sensitive identity document unless Wikifacta specifically requests an appropriate form of verification.
Wikifacta may ask for additional information when reasonably necessary to verify identity, confirm authority, locate relevant records, or protect another person’s privacy.
Wikifacta will aim to respond within the period required by applicable law. Complex requests, numerous requests, identity-verification delays, or requests involving the rights of other individuals may require additional time where legally permitted.
Requests concerning encyclopedia articles
[edit source]A request concerning information published in an encyclopedia article is not always the same as a request concerning private account or visitor data.
If an article contains inaccurate information about you, submit a correction request identifying:
- the article URL;
- the exact disputed statement;
- the proposed correction;
- reliable supporting sources; and
- your relationship to the article subject.
Wikifacta may review the request under its editorial standards as well as applicable privacy law.
A person does not necessarily have an unrestricted right to remove accurate, lawfully published, publicly relevant information from an encyclopedia. At the same time, Wikifacta should consider legitimate privacy interests, inaccurate information, disproportionate detail, sensitive information, source quality, public interest, freedom of expression, and applicable legal rights.
Email communications
[edit source]When a person emails Wikifacta, the message may be retained together with routing information, attachments, and later correspondence. Wikifacta may use the information to respond, maintain records, prevent abuse, and resolve disputes.
Wikifacta should not add a person to a marketing mailing list merely because the person submitted an editorial or privacy request.
If Wikifacta later offers optional newsletters or promotional emails, each message should include an appropriate method for unsubscribing. Operational, security, legal, and account-related messages may still be sent when necessary.
External links and embedded content
[edit source]Wikifacta articles may contain links to external websites. Wikifacta does not control how independent websites collect, use, or disclose information.
A third-party website may receive information such as the visitor’s Internet Protocol address, browser information, and the referring page when the user follows a link.
Pages may also contain embedded media, maps, videos, social posts, or other third-party resources. Embedded content may allow the provider to collect information or set cookies as though the visitor had interacted directly with that provider.
Users should review the privacy policy of an external service before providing personal information.
Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control
[edit source]Some browsers offer a “Do Not Track” setting. There is no single universally accepted technical standard governing every response to Do Not Track signals.
Where applicable law requires recognition of a valid opt-out preference signal, Wikifacta will seek to recognize supported signals such as Global Privacy Control.
A Global Privacy Control signal generally communicates a request to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information where the applicable law gives the user that right.
Data breaches and security incidents
[edit source]If Wikifacta becomes aware of a security incident affecting personal information, it may investigate the incident, contain the risk, restore affected systems, preserve relevant evidence, notify service providers, and take other appropriate action.
Where applicable law requires notification to affected individuals or a regulatory authority, Wikifacta will seek to provide that notification within the legally required period.
Users who become aware of a possible security vulnerability should avoid exploiting it or publicly disclosing sensitive details before Wikifacta has a reasonable opportunity to investigate.
Reports may be sent to info@wikifacta.org with the subject line “Security Report.”
Changes to this Privacy Policy
[edit source]Wikifacta may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in:
- website functions;
- data-processing practices;
- service providers;
- security measures;
- legal obligations;
- editorial processes;
- organizational structure; or
- regulatory guidance.
When this policy changes, the “Last updated” date at the top of the page should be revised.
Material changes may also be communicated through a website notice, account notification, email, or another reasonable method where appropriate or legally required.
Earlier versions may remain available through the page history. Continued use of Wikifacta after an updated policy takes effect constitutes acknowledgement of the revised policy, but it does not replace consent where applicable law specifically requires consent.
