Anne von Petersdorff, also professionally identified as Anne von Petersdorff-Campen, is a German documentary filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, scholar and educator from Berlin. Her work combines documentary storytelling with academic interests in representation, gender, mobility, migration, travel, intersectionality and digital humanities. She is known for co-directing the feature-length documentary Wanderlust: cuerpos en tránsito and for directing and writing the investigative documentary series Juan Carlos: Downfall of the King. She later served as a writer and executive producer of Elon Musk Unveiled – The Tesla Experiment.[1][2]

Anne Von Petersdorff has worked on international documentary films and series dealing with political power, social institutions, technology, migration and personal identity. Her professional career developed across academic research, independent filmmaking and television production. At Beetz Brothers Film Production in Berlin, she contributed to productions including The Forum, Viral, Reeperbahn – Special Unit FD65 and Juan Carlos: Downfall of the King. Her projects have appeared at international festivals and on television and streaming platforms in multiple countries.[3]

Early life and education

[edit | edit source]

Anne von Petersdorff is from Berlin, Germany. Public biographical accounts describe her as a Berlin-based filmmaker and as a scholar, writer, filmmaker and educator from the city.[1][4] Her education and early professional experiences were international. She studied and worked in Germany while also undertaking academic or filmmaking activities in Spain, Mexico, Cuba, Argentina and the United States.

Anne Von Petersdorff studied Culture, Language and Media at the University of Flensburg, completing the programme during the 2012–2013 academic year. Her master's-level work addressed human mobility, migration, tourism, travel, cosmopolitanism and the influence of technology on an increasingly interconnected world.[5][6] These subjects later became recurring themes in both her scholarship and documentary practice.

In 2011, she attended a workshop titled “The Construction of Documentary in the Audiovisual Field” at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. The school, commonly known as EICTV, provided an environment in which she developed her documentary practice alongside her academic work.[6] She later participated in the selection committee of the Festival de Cine Latinoamericano de La Plata in Argentina in 2015.

Anne Von Petersdorff pursued doctoral study at Michigan State University in the United States. She earned a Ph.D. in German Studies and Digital Humanities in 2018. Her doctoral project, Unexpected Journeys: At the Crossroads of Collaborative Filmmaking and Feminist Scholarship, was designed as a hybrid dissertation combining a written theoretical and historical study with a feature-length collaborative documentary.[7] The project examined German feminist filmmaking, autobiographical documentary practice, the representation of travelling women and the relationship between bodily experience and visual media.

While at Michigan State University, Anne von Petersdorff also worked as an instructor. Her academic approach placed creative production and scholarship in conversation rather than treating film solely as an illustration of written research. She later advocated for public-facing digital humanities and offered workshops intended to help students and faculty imagine, plan and execute digital dissertations. Her workshops introduced participants to tools, methods and models for connecting academic research with audiences beyond the university.[1]

Early film work

[edit | edit source]

Anne Von Petersdorff began her film-industry career in production and post-production. She worked as a production assistant and post-production supervisor on television commercials in Hamburg and Milan. She also contributed to the German anthology film Deutschland 09 and worked as a line producer on a short-film production created within the Cast & Cut fellowship of the northern German film-funding organisation Nordmedia.[6] These positions gave her practical experience in production management before she moved further into directing, screenwriting and creative producing.

Her early credits included producing and serving as unit production manager on the short film Stille Nacht, dated 2009–2010 by filmportal.de.[2] Her movement between academic institutions, commercial production environments and independent documentary work became characteristic of her later career. The combination allowed her to approach documentary projects both as researched cultural texts and as productions requiring international coordination, financing, interviewing, archival work and narrative structure.

Wanderlust: cuerpos en tránsito

[edit | edit source]

Anne Von Petersdorff's first feature documentary was Wanderlust: cuerpos en tránsito, co-directed, co-produced and edited with Argentine filmmaker María Pérez Escalá. Developed in connection with von Petersdorff's doctoral research, the film follows the two women during an overland and maritime journey from Cairo, Egypt, to Berlin, Germany. They travelled for approximately two and a half months without using aeroplanes, crossing numerous borders by land and sea.[8]

The documentary is structured as a bi-autobiographical travel film. Its two directors appear as travellers, filmmakers and research participants, using cameras to examine their encounters as well as one another. Their different cultural backgrounds—von Petersdorff is German and Pérez Escalá is Argentine—create parallel perspectives on border crossing, cultural expectations and the embodied experience of travel. The work asks how moving through public and transnational spaces may be experienced differently by women and how the camera shapes the representation of those experiences.[9]

The film was completed and circulated internationally during the second half of the 2010s, with sources variously listing 2016 or 2017 as its production or release year. It was screened at festivals in Europe and Latin America and was broadcast on Argentine national television.[6] Festival appearances included FEMCINE in Santiago, Crossing Europe in Linz, the Festival de Cine Latinoamericano de La Plata, Mujeres en Foco in Buenos Aires, Travel FilmFest in Cyprus and work-in-progress presentations at documentary and film festivals in Buenos Aires and Mar del Plata.[10]

Wanderlust: cuerpos en tránsito received an honourable mention at the Latin American Studies Association Film Festival in Barcelona in 2018. It also received the “La voz que rompe el silencio” prize at the Festival Internacional de Cine de Fusagasugá in Colombia.[10] The documentary became the creative component of Anne von Petersdorff's dissertation and established the themes of gender, movement, cross-cultural encounter and collaborative authorship that informed her subsequent work.

Documentary production career

[edit | edit source]

After completing her doctorate, Anne von Petersdorff established her professional base in Europe and worked with Beetz Brothers Film Production in Berlin. Her roles included assistant producer, associate producer, writer, director, creative producer and executive producer. The company's focus on international documentary films and factual series enabled her to participate in projects designed for theatrical exhibition, television and streaming distribution.

In 2019, she worked as an assistant or associate producer on The Forum, directed by Marcus Vetter. The feature documentary examines the World Economic Forum and its annual meeting in Davos, offering access to an institution where political and business leaders discuss global policy and economic issues.[10] Her contribution formed part of a period in which she increasingly worked on documentary projects involving political, economic and institutional power.

Anne Von Petersdorff was an associate producer on Viral, a 2021 documentary project by Udi Nir and Sagi Bornstein. The production was assembled from videos uploaded to YouTube during 2020 and presented the COVID-19 pandemic through material created by people experiencing lockdowns and social disruption.[11] She also directed an episode of the documentary series Wonder Women, focusing on women in leadership positions in industries where they remained underrepresented.

In 2022, Anne von Petersdorff contributed additional writing to Reeperbahn – Special Unit FD65. The documentary series recounts the work of Germany's first police unit established specifically to combat organised crime. Its subject placed her within the development of a true-crime series based on historical institutions and law-enforcement records.[10] Her broader credits at Beetz Brothers have also been associated with international productions such as Nisman: The Prosecutor, the President and the Spy.[3]

Juan Carlos: Downfall of the King

[edit | edit source]

Anne Von Petersdorff made her major documentary-series directorial debut with Juan Carlos: Downfall of the King, known in German as Juan Carlos: Liebe, Geld, Verrat. She directed the four-part 2023 series with Georg Tschurtschenthaler, with Jan Zabeil credited as co-director. Von Petersdorff also co-wrote the series with Pedro Barbadillo and Christian Beetz.[12]

The documentary traces the public rise and later scandals of Juan Carlos I of Spain. It examines his role in Spain's transition to democracy as well as allegations and controversies involving money, personal relationships, political influence and corruption. The series uses archival material and interviews, including testimony from individuals connected to the former monarch, to build a multi-part account of his reign, abdication and departure from Spain.

Juan Carlos: Downfall of the King had its world premiere in the documentary-series competition at the sixth Canneseries festival. It was produced by Beetz Brothers Film Production in association with Sky Studios and distributed internationally by NBCUniversal.[13] The series was subsequently made available in numerous countries through services including Sky, SkyShowtime and WOW.

The production won Best Docu-Series at the 2023 TV Series Festival in Berlin. It was nominated for Best Documentary Series at the German Television Awards, while its editing team received a nomination for Best Editing. The series later received a 2024 Grimme Prize special-category nomination and a Realscreen Award nomination in an archive-based non-fiction category.[14] These distinctions represented wider recognition for the production team and helped establish Anne von Petersdorff as a director and writer of internationally distributed investigative documentary series.

Elon Musk Unveiled – The Tesla Experiment

[edit | edit source]

Anne Von Petersdorff later worked as a writer and executive producer on the 2025 feature documentary Elon Musk Unveiled – The Tesla Experiment, also circulated under titles including Elon Musk Uncovered – The Tesla Experiment and the working title The Tesla Files. The film was directed by Andreas Pichler. Von Petersdorff shared screenplay credit with Pichler and Christian Beetz and was one of the executive producers alongside Yara Hueck Costa and Martin Pieper.[15]

The documentary grew from reporting based on the “Tesla Files”, a large collection of internal company data supplied to the German newspaper Handelsblatt by a whistleblower. The film investigates complaints and accidents associated with Tesla vehicles and driver-assistance technology, corporate responses to reported problems and the wider relationship between technological ambition, regulation and public safety. It includes interviews with former employees, journalists, victims and specialists.[16]

Anne Von Petersdorff was involved with the project from its early development and played a substantial role in research and writing. She also represented the film in public discussions and festival events, explaining the investigative and creative processes behind the production.[17] The film screened in international documentary and film-festival contexts, including the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam and the Göteborg Film Festival.

Themes and approach

[edit | edit source]

Across Anne von Petersdorff's work, documentary production functions as both investigation and cultural analysis. Her early research concentrated on human mobility and the representation of women travelling across borders. Later projects expanded towards institutions and powerful public figures, including the World Economic Forum, the Spanish monarchy and the corporate and technological systems surrounding Tesla and Elon Musk.

Her films commonly combine personal testimony, archival material and extensive research. Wanderlust: cuerpos en tránsito used the filmmakers' bodies and experiences as part of the documentary method, while Juan Carlos: Downfall of the King and Elon Musk Unveiled – The Tesla Experiment relied on witnesses, documents, journalistic investigation and archives to examine less visible structures of power. This movement from autobiographical travel filmmaking to large-scale investigative productions demonstrates continuity in her interest in who is represented, who controls a narrative and how visual media can make complex systems understandable.

Anne Von Petersdorff's academic background also informs her support for digital and hybrid scholarship. Her doctoral work challenged the assumption that a dissertation must exist only as a conventional written text. By combining a feature film with theoretical research, she presented filmmaking as a legitimate method of producing and communicating scholarly knowledge.[7] Her later educational activities continued this effort to connect universities, creative practice and public audiences.

Selected writing and scholarship

[edit | edit source]

Anne Von Petersdorff's doctoral dissertation is titled Unexpected Journeys: At the Crossroads of Collaborative Filmmaking and Feminist Scholarship. She has also published work on autobiographical and haptic filmmaking, including the peer-reviewed multimedia essay “Embodied Encounters: A Case for Autobiographical Filmmaking and Haptic Visuality”. Her research situates documentary film within debates about feminist representation, embodiment, collaborative authorship and the ethics of looking.

Her scholarly and professional identities overlap. Research into mobility informed Wanderlust, while later investigative productions required the interpretation of complex archival, legal, technical and journalistic material. In both settings, her work has emphasised accessible storytelling without abandoning the research process behind it.
